About the Northwest Chapter
The Northwest Chapter of Back Country Horsemen of BC is based in the beautiful Bulkley Valley in northwest British Columbia. Established in 1999, the chapter includes a diverse group of members living throughout the region, from the Kispiox Valley to Fraser Lake and the Southside area.
We traditionally hold monthly meetings in Smithers from September through May. Meetings often include a guest presentation, planning for upcoming rides, work bees and events, as well as time to catch up with good friends.
Rides and Events
Our riding season begins in early May with Carl’s Spring Ride & Dinner and continues through to our annual Memorial Ride and potluck on Thanksgiving weekend. Our annual Solstice Ride and potluck at the Shorter Ranch is always a highlight of the season.
We are fortunate to have easy access to many incredible mountain riding areas, including Silver King Basin, the Lyon Creek Trail in the Babine Mountains, Hunter Basin, Telkwa Pass, Dome Mountain and Hungry Hill.
Coalmine Horse Camp
Over the past several years, our chapter has developed the much-loved Coalmine Horse Camp on Goathorn Creek, just outside Telkwa. The facility includes a clubhouse, a covered cooking and meeting area, an arena, equipment storage, an obstacle course and several campsites with corrals, firepits and access to water.
Many of our rides take place along the extensive network of trails surrounding the camp, which chapter volunteers have worked hard to clear and maintain. We are very proud that Coalmine Horse Camp received Back Country Horsemen of BC’s Outstanding Project Award.
