Since 1991, Back Country Horsemen of British Columbia has existed to create and maintain equine riding camps and trails, while offering opportunity for education, advocacy and fellowship.
With close to 1000 members in over 20 chapters across the province, members have contributed thousands of volunteer hours to building and keeping trails open to equine use.

It all begins with volunteers. For more than 35 years, Back Country Horsemen of BC members have generously volunteered their time and skills to benefit recreational trail riders and other trail user groups across the province. Since 2000 alone, BCHBC volunteer contributions have exceeded $2 million in value, supporting a wide range of trail and infrastructure projects.
BCHBC plays an active role in developing, constructing, and maintaining trails, infrastructure, and equestrian-friendly camp facilities throughout British Columbia. Our work helps ensure safe, accessible, and enjoyable trail experiences for both backcountry and front-country users.
Over the years, BCHBC has built strong, collaborative relationships with government agencies, including municipal and regional districts, BC Parks, and Recreation Sites & Trails BC. Together, we support initiatives that enhance trail access and recreational opportunities for equestrians and other trail users within local communities.
Without the dedication of our volunteers, BCHBC members would not have hundreds of miles of trails or more than 20 equestrian friendly camps across the province for members and the public to enjoy. Member commitment is the foundation of everything we do.

Thanks to the efforts of BCHBC, camping with your equine partner has become much easier in British Columbia over the years.
In partnership with government agencies, BCHBC volunteers have created and/or maintain more than 20 Equine-friendly camps across the province for you to explore.
BCHBC camps can be found within Municipalities, Regional Districts, Forestry Recreation Sites, and near Provincial Parks.
These camps offer the perfect base for exploring BC’s stunning landscapes in both front and back country. Best of all, most sites feature low daily user fees—or no fees at all.
Many locations offer typical campsite amenities such as water, pit toilets, picnic tables and fire rings. Most importantly, the sites BCHBC maintains also include pens or corrals or offer hi-lining areas for your equine partner.
Enjoy your morning coffee, then saddle up to ride right from your campsite on the BCHBC member-maintained trails. Most trails are flagged or signed along the route for your convenience.

BCHBC membership is per “calendar year” (Jan 1 – Dec 31st); however – memberships purchased between November 1st and December 31st of the current year will automatically extend to December 31st of the following year.
BCHBC Chapters regularly provide members with practical, and often hands-on education to support safe, enjoyable trail riding and responsible horse ownership.
Education may take the form of guest speakers at regular chapter meetings, covering topics such as fire extinguisher use, bear safety, GPS navigation, saddle fitting, hoof care, and many others.
Chapters also organize clinics and courses for members, including trail first aid, ATV safety, chainsaw safety and certification, packing, and trailer safety. These learning opportunities help build confidence, skills, and leadership within our membership.
BCHBC advocates for trail riding and equine access in several ways.
Representing BCHBC, Chapters have built strong relationships with local government in their communities and BCHBC currently holds more than 20 Partnership Agreements with BCParks, RSTBC (Recreational Sites and Trails of BC) and private land managers.
Advocacy goes beyond government engagement. Chapters also work with other local trail user groups to foster cooperation, mutual understanding, and shared stewardship—helping ensure long-term access for everyone.
At the provincial level, BCHBC actively participates with the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC and Horse Council of BC, keeping trail access and equine-friendly policies at the forefront.
